By 2030, a 40% global shortfall in a stable supply of good-quality fresh water is expected. The situation in San Miguel and the state of Guanajuato is even more pressing. On Tuesday we will screen “Flow: For the Love of Water,” Irena Salina's award-winning investigation into the world water crisis. Nearly two million people die each year from water-borne diseases worldwide. The root causes of this crisis range from pesticide and chemical runoff, to not having access to clean water. As of 2008, 70% of the world’s water was used for agricultural needs. With industrial agricultural comes heavy pesticide and chemical use. These chemicals flow into the river systems and alter ecosystems. Salina builds a case against the growing privatization of the world's dwindling fresh water supply. In 2008, the U.N. estimated that it would require funds of $30 billion a year to provide clean, accessible, drinking water to the entire planet while in the previous year, the world spent $90 billion on bottled water. Here in the state of Guanajuato, surface water is being depleted from overuse and deep groundwater is being pumped to the surface. This deep groundwater is more than 10,000 years old and has been in contact with subsurface volcanic rock which has increased its concentration of fluoride, arsenic and sodium to unacceptable levels. This water is already being consumed in several communities of San Miguel, Dolores Hidalgo and San Diego de la Union. Its use is spreading and is seriously affecting the health of the . 03:00pm classes: Freedom From Pain, Healer Lydia Wong 03:00pm-04:30pm Cost: Location: Azteca Pavilion, Acamapixtle 13B, Colonia Azteca Contact: allthingshealing@hotmail.com Website: Freedom From Pain Classes with Master Healer Lydia Wong, E-RYT 500. It allows one to see through the mind’s conditioning and thereby live more fully in the present moment. The SMA Meditation Community is an open, flowing collection of people from different traditions (including various Buddhist lineages) who share a love of sitting in silence. We also share a love of spiritual community free of doctrine or belief, based in equality and mutual respect. Everyone is welcome. Because friendships with like-minded people support the inner path, we usually meet informally after sittings to share ideas and come to know one another. Although the forty-minute silent meditations begin at 10:10 and end at 10:50, please feel free to come and go quietly at any time. Meditation assistance is available before or after the sit. In an effort to maintain control of Mexico, Napoleon installed the loyal Ferdinand Maximilian Joseph, younger brother of the Austrian emperor Francis Joseph I, to help wrest power from Benito Juárez, Mexico’s democratically-elected president and serve as the young country’s second ‘emperor’. As an unelected foreigner lacking support of the people and with weak support from far away Napoleon, the hapless Maximilian was perhaps doomed from the start. His story is one of romance, naivete, arrogance and bravado, making for one of Hollywood’s most interesting historical films. Join us for a screening of the rare classic Juárez (1939) starring Bette Davis and Paul Muni as Maximillian and his strong-willed wife, Carlotta. 01:30pm game: Scrabble 01:30pm- Cost: free Location: Hotel Quinta Loreto Contact: reneklassen@hotmail.com Website: . 03:00pm classes: Freedom From Pain, Healer Lydia Wong 03:00pm-04:30pm Cost: Location: Azteca Pavilion, Acamapixtle 13B, Colonia Azteca Contact: lydiawong@me.com, 152 5558 Website: Freedom From Pain Classes with Master Healer Lydia Wong, E-RYT 500. In this lecture, you are going to examine the claims of the health benefits of tai chi practices an find out if there is any truth in them. Almost universally, studies show two things. First, even simple, basic practice of the movements of tai chi and qigong have positive therapeutic or curative effects on most diseases and health conditions. Second, this practice has no known side effects or contraindications. It is safe for all. Studies for specific diseases show tai chi as superior to all other forms of non-pharmaceutical treatment. Because tai chi has no side effects, it may be appropriate as an important complement or replacement for drug therapy. The three most common causes of early mortality in America are heart disease, cancer, and lung disease. Currently heart disease is the number 1 killer in all America, especially if you are over 65. A 53 person study at Taiwan University showed a year of tai chi significantly boosted exercise capacity, lowered blood pressure, and improved levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, and C-reactive protein in people at high risk for heart disease. It found no improvement in a control group that did not practice tai chi. In a 30 person pilot study at Harvard Medical School, 12 weeks of tai chi improved participants' ability to walk and quality of life. It also reduced blood levels of B-type natriuretic protein, an indicator of heart disease. Dr. Peter Wayne, professor of medicine at Harvard, and author of The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi, said, "What's been interesting t . 05:30pm dance: Danzon Dance Classes 05:30pm-07:00pm Cost: free Location: Juan Manuel Fajardo Sala, La Biblioteca Contact: Website: . 06:30pm language: Italian Conversation Group 06:30pm- Cost: Location: Mi Vida Restaurant, Hernandez Macias 97 Contact: 152-7482 Website: www.mividarestaurant.com All levels of Italian are spoken Please RSVP 152-7482 Website . . ★07:00pm music: Rain or Shine, Songwriters of SMA 07:00pm-10:00pm Cost: $ Location: Cafe de la Parroquia, Jesus 11 Contact: Website: Rain or Shine, Songwriters of SMA - music Thursday, August 11, 7-10pm . 08:00pm mixed: Behind the Scene 08:00pm- Cost: 20 Location: Plata, Zacateros 73 Contact: Website: A weekly series featuring local and international talent! For more in-depth meditation instruction, ask Ann Barden (Vipassana) or Jerry Steward (general) at jermer@hotmail.com, 154-0877. All offerings are free, donations welcome.
